The history of celebrating World Pharmacist Day is not so old. During the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Congress in Istanbul, Turkey 2009, the Turkish Pharmacists Association proposed to celebrate a World Pharmacists Day annually, on September 25 (the day that FIP was founded in 1912).This proposal was collectively received by the Council and since 2010, World Pharmacists Day has been coordinated by FIP and celebrated across the world. Every year, a new theme is announced to showcase the pharmacist in their field of patient care and their involvement in Pharmaceutical industries.
“Pharmacists: Caring for you” is the theme of this year’s World Pharmacists Day.
In Bangladesh, including public and private, about 30 universities are offering pharmacy course, thousands of pharmacy graduates are penetrating into pharma market. Bangladesh made great achievement in this sector. Industrial pharmacy is the key choice to build up career. In Industrial pharmacy, majority are involved in pharmaceutical manufacturing plant and pharmaceutical marketing section. Now our manufactured products are imported by European and American countries also as well.
According to the independent, there are about 2000 hospitals in Bangladesh. Although few hospitals started providing health care service by hospital pharmacists but keeping the increased number of pharmacy graduates in mind, if we start involving more pharmacists in hospital for patient care, surely it will enhance the level of health care service in Bangladesh. Many universities offer credit or non credit course of industrial internship program to their students. For pharmacy graduates, besides pharmaceutical industry if this internship program also includes patient care training in hospitals, then the students can get the opportunity to learn patient care system, patient care service and thus we can also prepare pharmacists for healthcare service from academia.
Besides, nowadays a good number of pharmacists are interested in research works. So, creating research opportunities can also be a very helpful step for the development of our country in medicine sector. Many public and private institutes are providing research opportunities based on their demand and availability of equipments, reagents.
In conclusion, we can say that, still there are many options for pharmacists to contribute to the healthcare system. Creating more career opportunity for pharmacists is a demand of time now.
