(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Trapped Ion Quantum Computing Ref 20367
Applications are invited for the position of a Research Fellow in Trapped Ion Quantum Computing in the Ion Quantum Technology Group in the Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies at the University of Sussex. The position is part of the UK National Quantum Technologies programme and is concerned with the development of utility scale quantum computers capable of solving disruptive societal and industry challenges. Trapped ions are one of the most mature implementations to deliver practical quantum technologies. We have developed a unique approach for trapped-ion quantum computing that enables scaling to a large number of qubits. The approach couples scalable global microwave based quantum gate technology with fully integrated quantum computing microchip modules that can be linked together using fast electric field links. This position is part of a larger effort to develop and operate quantum computing solutions which scale to significantly larger system sizes. We currently operate 5 quantum computer prototypes in our lab and the position will focus on one or multiple of these experimental setups directed towards the implementation of quantum error correction, ion transport and quantum gate execution, raising gate fidelities, operation of multi-module quantum computing prototypes and the development of quantum computing microchips. Some of the typical tasks for this position include operation of ion trap experiments, high power microwave setups, laser systems, optical setups and ultra-high vacuum setups as well as carrying out quantum information science experiments, quantum error correction, perform simulations of quantum systems, quantum control and other relevant theory and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students. The successful applicant should have an experimental PhD in a field related to our research area such as atomic physics, optical physics or quantum physics along with a good publication record. The salary offered will be appropriate to the qualifications, standing and experience of the successful candidate.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc summary/title: Research Fellow in Quantum Technology Ref 7473
We are delighted to offer a full-time research fellowship with the Ion Trap Cavity-QED and Molecular Physics (ITCM) group at the University of Sussex, led by Professor Matthias Keller. Join our team and you will be part of an EPSRC UK-funded consortium working on a novel atomic clock and its applications. The specific research project aims to develop a novel atomic clock scheme for portable systems based on the developments at the University of Sussex. Our consortium brings together leading teams from the University of Sussex, the University of Loughborough, the National Physical Laboratory and companies from the quantum technology, telecommunication and defense sectors. Our objective is to build a miniaturized portable atomic clock based on a novel interrogation scheme on a single calcium ion, with an accuracy at the 10-14 level or better. At ITCM, we have developed a novel interrogation scheme for ion-based atomic clocks that promises significantly improved robustness compared to conventional optical atomic clocks. The project aims to demonstrate the novel scheme in an existing system, implement the system on an existing portable system and demonstrate its advantages in real-world settings. You will join the Portable Atomic Clock team in the ITCM group and demonstrate the novel scheme and its use in portable atomic clock systems.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Cancer Research Ref 20657
Applications are invited for the post of Research Fellow in Cancer Research (non-clinical) at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS). We are looking to recruit a scientist with a strong background in cancer research, or a related discipline to work on a recently awarded Blood Cancer UK project grant. The appointee will join our internationally recognised haemato-oncology research team. The Haemato-oncology group is a successful collaborative partnership between clinicians and scientists based in the Medical Research Building at BSMS. The laboratory-based ‘Pepper Team’ (https://pepper.science) and computational systems biology ‘Mitchell Team’ (https://mitchell.science) currently represent the two largest groupings. Our main areas of expertise are in modelling the tumour microenvironment, understanding the role of NF-kB in disease progression and the development of drug resistance and the pre-clinical evaluation of novel targeted agents. The successful candidate will benefit from our strong network of national and international collaborators and our established links with academic medicinal chemists and pharmaceutical companies. The selected candidate will be part of the vibrant Haematology Research Group, spanning BSMS and the University of Sussex (https://www.bsms.ac.uk/research/clinical-and-experimental-medicine/cancer/hrg/haematology-research-group.aspx). We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic candidate with a PhD in a relevant area, who can demonstrate technical expertise in a range of laboratory techniques, ideally including tissue culture and flow cytometry. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Organometallic Chemistry x 2 Ref 21045/21046
Following the award of an EPSRC standard grant to Prof. Richard Layfield, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available for an outstanding chemist to undertake research in the field of lanthanide and actinide organometallic chemistry. The project will entail the design, synthesis and measurement of new f-element organometallic complexes in low oxidation states. Two positions are available, both of which last for up to 36 months and are available from 1st October 2023. The ideal candidate will have, or should be close to completing, a PhD or equivalent in synthetic organometallic/coordination chemistry. Expertise in the synthesis and structural characterization of air-sensitive compounds (including glove-box techniques) are essential. The successful applicant will have experience in experimental aspects of small-molecule structure determination by X-ray crystallography, from crystal growth to preparation of data for publication. Experience of solution-phase NMR spectroscopy is advantageous, and you should ideally have experience of ligand synthesis. The successful applicant will also demonstrate a willingness to learn about magnetic property measurements and associated data analysis techniques. You should be capable of working under your own initiative and leading a small research team consisting of PhD and undergraduate research students. Excellent communication and organizational skills are therefore required.

The School of Life Sciences at the University of Sussex is at the forefront of research in the UK. In the recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (REF 2021), 100% of our Impact cases in Biological Sciences and Chemistry were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. The School has received substantial recent University investment and is embarking on an exciting and extensive, multi-million pound refurbishment and improvement project. Based in the School of Life Sciences, the Genome Damage and Stability Centre (http://www.sussex.ac.uk/gdsc/), is an internationally renowned Institute carrying out research on the response of cells to DNA damage, genome instability, and its relationship to disease. We provide a stimulating and supportive environment and our expertise covers a range of experimental systems. Motivated applicants are invited to apply for a BBSRC-funded postdoctoral position to study the impact of DNA damage on epigenome restoration and the interplay with DNA fidelity in stem cells (mES cells and human IPs). We will investigate whether DNA damage-induced epigenetics changes are fully restored after DNA repair and decipher the interplay between genetic and epigenetic restoration at different chromatin contexts. We also aim to establish the importance of genomic and epigenomic maintenance in cell identity and fate. We will determine the long-term consequences of genetic and epigenetic scars in stem cells fitness and their potential to differentiate. For visualization and mapping of breaks and epigenetic changes high end microscopy and NGS approaches will be used. Expertise in any of the above will be positively considered but not absolutely required.
