The SCImago Research group has been publishing The SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) since 2009. It is a classification of academic and research-related institutions ranked by a composite indicator that combines three different indicators based on research performance, innovation outputs, and societal impact measured by their web visibility.

In 2009, only three institutes from Bangladesh (BUET, DUET, and RU) were in the rankings. In 2021, 30 institutes from Bangladesh were on the list. This year in 2022, 37 Bangladeshi institutes are on the list while a total of 8084 institutes were included in the ranking from around the world.
