The Indigenous and Global Health Research Group (IGHRG) led by Dr. Sangita Sharma, the Canada Research Chair in Population Health, Professor in Indigenous and Global Health Research Group in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta is currently accepting applications for postdoctoral positions with the team. The IGHRG is a multi-disciplinary research group of 25+ staff that was established by Dr. Sharma in 2010. Dr. Sharma and the team have an extensive international background working with over 22 populations in various countries worldwide but now primarily focus on working with Indigenous and/or ethnic minority populations in Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories (NT), and Nunavut (NU). Current funded projects include: assessing health and wellness and access to healthcare services with Indigenous seniors and Elders living in NT; maternal and infant health care and outcomes for Indigenous populations in NT; identifying the barriers to and opportunities for improving access to healthcare services for Indigenous populations in NT to inform culturally appropriate programming to improve patient experiences; capturing the anticipated and unanticipated consequences of COVID-19 preventive measures with Indigenous communities in NU and NT; working with NT Indigenous communities to understand the perspectives of community members toward HPV, HPV vaccination along with attitudes towards and experience with the COVID-19 vaccine; assessing side effects and experience of COVID-19 vaccination among NT and NU Indigenous communities; gathering culturally safe recommendations for increasing trust in public health prevention measures in northern Indigenous communities; and working with 25 NT and NU communities to explore community immunity from COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccination as well as gather recommendations to support future pandemic preparedness in Arctic Canada. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position in Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory – Memory for Events Lab
The Memory for Events (ME) Lab (PI: Dr. Peggy L. St. Jacques) at the University of Alberta invites applications for a fully funded postdoctoral researcher to lead cognitive neuroscience research investigating memory for real-world events. The postdoc will contribute to research examining the neural mechanisms by which people form and remember immersive memories for realistic events. Candidates excited about functional neuroimaging of memory for real-world events, the role of visual perspective in shaping mental models of events, and/or the use of state-of-the-art immersive virtual reality methodologies to study event memory are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have a PhD in psychology and/or neuroscience, and a record of publishing fMRI research using advanced methods to study memory (e.g., MVPA, network analysis). A strong quantitative background and competency in programming environments such as Matlab, SPM, Python, R, and Psychtoolbox is also required. Familiarity with Unity/C# and/or immersive virtual reality methodologies (e.g., Oculus Rift) is highly desirable but not required. Dr. St. Jacques is a Canada Research Chair in the Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory, and the ME Lab is funded by an NSERC Discovery Grant. Our newly renovated lab space in the Department of Psychology includes 6 behavioral testing rooms and 2 virtual reality suites. Functional neuroimaging is conducted within walking distance at the Peter S. Allen MR Research Centre using a research dedicated 3T Prisma Siemens scanner and MRI-compatible stereoscopic headset for presentation of 3D video stimuli. A postdoc position is available immediately to study calcium and redox signaling between the Endoplasmic Reticulum and Mitochondria in the Simmen laboratory (Department of Cell Biology, University of Alberta). The successful applicant will be studying the function of redox-sensitive ER proteins in this mechanism. These proteins localize to ER-mitochondria contact sites dependent on oxidation and reduction of cysteines. A special focus interest will be on the significance of this mechanism for the crosstalk between various CNS cell types, using co-culture approaches. The Department of Computing Science, and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), at the University of Alberta have an immediate opening for one postdoctoral fellow to work with Amii Fellow Professor Osmar Zaiane in the area of Artificial Intelligence research. Amii is one of three centers of excellence in the Pan-Canadian AI strategy. The postdoctoral fellow will work on a research project related to Machine Malfunction Prediction and Machine Adaptation using Machine Learning. The Animal Cognition Research Group (ACRG) in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Science, at the University of Alberta is hiring a full-time postdoctoral researcher to lead behavioural/neural research examining how learning and cognitive abilities allow animals to solve problems they face in the wild (e.g., foraging, how to know what nest to build). Our work is currently focused on variation in cognitive abilities (e.g., sex differences in learning based on nest-building history, among-individual variation in cognitive abilities), social learning in foraging and nest building, and the trade-off between asocial and social information use. We are also looking to expand our work to include an invertebrate model system(s). The ACRG is funded by an NSERC Discovery Grant, the Faculty of Science, and a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) to the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Lauren Guillette. Our laboratory space includes free-flight colony rooms for zebra finches, extensive laboratory space for customizable behavioural testing, and a full histology and microscopy suite. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher position in the area of transportation engineering to work under Dr. Karim El-Basyouny, Professor of Transportation Engineering and City of Edmonton Research Chair in Urban Traffic Safety. The focus of his research program is on remote sensing applications in roadway infrastructure digitization. Research opportunities include intelligent/computational design, infrastructure mapping, semantic segmentation of LiDAR data, automated travel modelling and testing, and predictive control/operation. Research objects cover LiDAR mapping technologies, scanning system design and roadway and roadside measurements, and wayside feature detection.
