Position Overview:
The Department of Molecular Biology and Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS)—the Swedish EMBL node—at Umeå University invites expressions of interest for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. Nature Careers
The department, jointly affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Medicine, conducts both fundamental and translational research into molecular mechanisms in bacterial and eukaryotic systems. The department is renowned as the birthplace of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing discovery, awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Researchers benefit from world-class infrastructure, including advanced cryo-electron microscopy and a new ABSL-3 facility. Successful candidates working on infection-related research may join MIMS and its European network of excellence centers (www.mims.umu.se).
This position comes with a startup package of approximately 20 million SEK (≈ €1.8 million) over 5 years to help establish an independent research group. Key Responsibilities:

Conduct independent, high-quality research in molecular biology or molecular infection medicine.

Lead and supervise doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

Develop and teach courses (in English or Swedish, some online).

Participate in academic administration and collaboration across faculties.

Contribute to the department’s strong culture of collegiality and cooperation.
Eligibility Criteria:
-
Doctoral degree (or equivalent foreign qualification) awarded within the last 7 years.

Proven record of impactful research and postdoctoral experience.

Demonstrated teaching ability (English proficiency required; Swedish to be learned if not known).

Not previously employed at Umeå University for more than 6 months by February 2026.

Commitment to mentoring early-career scientists and supervising theses.
Assessment & Selection:
Applicants will be evaluated under Chapter 4, Section 4a of the Higher Education Ordinance.
