An Interdisciplinary Journey Across Four European Universities.

The Erasmus Mundus Master’s Programme in Human Rights Policy and Practice (EMHRPP) is a two-year interdisciplinary course that prepares students to tackle global human rights challenges. It offers a unique study experience across four top European universities, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. The programme emphasizes employability and professionalization, equipping students with essential skills like report writing, project management, campaign creation, and public speaking. The Professional Seminar Series and collaboration with academic, corporate, and nonprofit partners enhance learning through seminars and study visits. Additionally, students can intern with a human rights organization in London during the third semester, ensuring hands-on experience for a successful career in the field.  Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

Programme Overview:
  • Duration: 24 months (2 academic years)
  • Mobility Track: Students will study across four partner universities:
    • University of Gothenburg, Sweden
    • University of Deusto, Spain
    • University of Roehampton, United Kingdom
    • The Arctic University of Norway (UiT), Norway

Programme Structure:
  1. First Semester (August – January): University of Gothenburg, Sweden

    • Lays the foundation by introducing human rights as an interdisciplinary field and examines where responsibility for human rights should lie.
  2. Second Semester (February – June): University of Deusto, Spain

    • Focuses on producing and accessing quality human rights knowledge and evidence, and examines relativistic approaches to human rights in light of cultural and ethnic diversity.
  3. Third Semester (August – January): University of Roehampton, UK

    • Provides practical experience through an internship at a human rights organization in London, the Professional Seminar Series, and modules about theorizing human rights and social change.
  4. Fourth Semester (February – June): Master’s Thesis

    • Consists of writing your master’s thesis in Human Rights Policy and Practice, based at one of the four partner universities.

Mobility to Norway will be included for those students supervised in their master’s thesis by UiT.

To apply for the Erasmus Mundus Master’s Programme in Human Rights Policy and Practice (EMHRPP), follow these steps:

  1. Verify Eligibility:

    • Academic Qualifications: Hold a first degree equivalent to 180 ECTS from an internationally recognized university or college.
    • Professional Experience: Have a minimum of two years’ practitioner experience in the field of human rights, which can include regular employment, internships, or voluntary work.
    • English Proficiency: Demonstrate proficiency in English, equivalent to English B/English 6 at the upper secondary level or through internationally recognized tests such as TOEFL or IELTS.
  2. Prepare Application Documents:

    • Official Transcript of Records: Provide in English.
    • Motivation Letter: Use the assigned form, ensuring it is well-structured and written in clear and concise language.
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV): Any format is accepted.
    • Two Letters of Recommendation: These should support your application and attest to your qualifications and experience.

  3. Submit Application:

    • Create an account on the University Admissions website.
    • Upload all required documents as specified in the application checklist.
    • Ensure that all documents are submitted before the application deadline.
  4. Apply for Erasmus Mundus Scholarship (Optional):

    • If you wish to apply for the scholarship, submit the scholarship application form along with your programme application on the University Admissions website.

  5. Await Selection Results:

    • Applications are evaluated based on academic competence, motivation letter, work experience, and recommendation letters.
    • The Joint Admission Committee ranks applicants, with a maximum score of 100 points.
    • Admission decisions will be communicated to applicants after the evaluation process.

After Graduation:

Graduates receive the joint Degree of Master of Arts in Human Rights Policy and Practice, issued by the University of Gothenburg. After graduation, you will be prepared to:

  • Work professionally and effectively with the protection, promotion, and implementation of human rights in a changing global context;
  • Use analytical skills and expertise in human rights perspectives, contexts, organizations, policy-making, and practice;
  • Evaluate and apply these skills to different cases and environments;
  • Develop human rights-based policies, programmes, and projects with professionalism.

Our alumni work for nongovernmental organizations such as Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, and Save the Children, in various UN agencies, and as lawyers, researchers, and teachers.
