The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), in partnership with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), is pleased to announce the 2025 call for applications for its Research Grants Programme. This initiative aims to bolster scientific research in developing countries, particularly in Science and Technology Lagging Countries (S&TLCs), by providing essential funding to researchers and research groups. Grant Categories:
Grants for Individuals:

- Purpose: Support individual scientists undertaking high-quality research in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics.
- Funding: Up to USD 30,000, with a maximum of USD 20,000 allocated for equipment and consumable supplies.
- Eligibility: Applicants must be nationals of developing countries, hold a PhD, be at the early stages of their research careers, have some research experience, hold a position at a university or research institution in an S&TLC, and be 45 years of age or under.
- Application Deadline: 3 April 2025.
Grants for Research Groups:

- Purpose: Assist research groups in S&TLCs to enhance their research capabilities.
- Funding: Up to USD 54,000, with a maximum of USD 40,000 for equipment and consumable supplies.
- Eligibility: Research groups led by a principal investigator who is a national of a developing country, holds a PhD, and is based at a university or research institution in an S&TLC.
- Application Deadline: 3 April 2025.

Collaborative Grants for Interdisciplinary Research:

- Purpose: Foster interdisciplinary research collaborations between two scientists from different scientific fields.
- Funding: Up to USD 35,000 per scientist (USD 70,000 total), with up to USD 30,000 each for equipment and consumable supplies.
- Eligibility: Two collaborating scientists, one male and one female, at least one from a Least Developed Country (LDC), both holding PhDs and based in S&TLCs.
- Application Deadline: 3 April 2025.
Grants for Maintenance:

- Purpose: Provide support for the upkeep and repair of laboratory equipment previously purchased with TWAS grants.
- Funding: USD 3,000.
- Eligibility: Past TWAS grantees in one of the S&TLCs.
- Application Deadline: 3 April 2025.

- Submission: Applications must be submitted online through the TWAS website.
- Guidelines: Applicants are advised to carefully read the specific guidelines for each grant category before applying.

Additional Notes:
- Applicants may apply for only one program per calendar year within the TWAS and OWSD portfolios.
- The grants do not cover the salaries of researchers and/or students, field expenses, or travel expenses.
- Purchasing certain items, such as laptops, tablets, drones, and laboratory animals, is not supported.
