PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Women in Policing (1.0 FTE)

The Department of Sociology  external link has a job opening for a PhD position in the topic of Women in Policing. The project will assess how gender diversification in police organisations can influence policing outcomes and the experiences of women in policing. Gender diversification in policing has been argued as the solution to many problems in policing, including reducing disproportionate use of force and misconduct, building trust with communities, adopting non-traditional policing tactics, and improving job satisfaction more generally. In addition, women in leadership positions are considered particularly relevant for fostering changes to organisational culture, yet the number of women in police leadership positions remains low. One important step in understanding organisational and other outcomes in policing is to evaluate when and why women stay or leave the police. This project is part of the Stevin prize awarded to Tanja van der Lippe.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Global Scale Stable Isotope Measurements on Atmospheric Methane (1.0 FTE)

In this position you will join a and be responsible for measuring and interpreting the stable isotopic composition of atmospheric methane. Methane is emitted from different sources to the atmosphere and carries a distinct isotopic composition that is characteristic for the respective source process. This composition can be used to quantify the relative contributions of methane from different source categories in the atmosphere, and methane isotope measurements are becoming a standard tool for source partitioning. You will join the international research project FETCH4 (Fate, Emissions, and Transport of CH4 in past and modern atmospheres) and carry out measurements of the isotopic composition (both d13C and dD) of air samples from globally representative locations, as well as polar firn and ice core air. In addition you will carry out experiments on the kinetic isotope effect in removal reactions of methane.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Equine Reproduction (1.0 FTE)

Utrecht University is looking for a PhD candidate to join the international and enthusiastic ‘Fertility & Reproduction’ team of the Department of Clinical Sciences. We don’t yet understand how to trigger the dynamic events enabling stallion spermatozoa to achieve fertilizing ability, ‘capacitation’. Accordingly, in vitro production of horse embryos relies on intracytoplasmic sperm injection, and tools for investigating stallion subfertility are limited. To address these deficits a better understanding of `capacitation-related characteristics’ in stallion spermatozoa is required. These signaling processes are poorly understood but play a crucial role in a stallion’s fertility potential. The PhD candidate will investigate sperm capacitation using various analytical techniques. The objectives of this project include the application of conventional IVF using equine oocytes and cooled and frozen/thawed stallion semen; and the development of functional capacitation induction tests to screen sub-fertile stallions. The successful candidate will join the ‘Fertility & Reproduction’ research group at the Department of Clinical Sciences. F&R is an interdepartmental group of (veterinary) scientists that investigate aspects of oocyte quality, fertilization, early embryonic development, embryo-maternal communication, and causes of early embryonic death (e.g. aneuploidy). The group has access to modern clinical facilities, a large commercial ART programme, and state-of-the-art research facilities (IVF lab; confocal, spinning disk and electron microscopy; flow cytometry; next generation sequencing; HPLC and Mass Spectrometry etc.), either directly or via collaboration within the university. The candidate will join a team (equine reproduction group) of 5 researcher/clinicians, 4 laboratory assistants, and other PhD candidates and Master’s students. The student will enroll in the University’s PhD programme ‘Cancer, Stem Cells and Development’, and be encouraged to develop a network within and beyond the University. Achieving societal missions requires radical innovations by entrepreneurs who are driven by sustainability concerns and can act outside the status quo. However, the Netherlands has a low level of sustainable entrepreneurship. Regional conditions must be improved to increase the prevalence and success of sustainable entrepreneurship. The ESMEE project proposes a data-and dialogue driven entrepreneurial ecosystem approach to improve the functioning of mission-driven innovation systems. PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Influential/Performative Machine Learning (1.0 FTE)

Key requirements in the use of AI systems are transparency, robustness, and human oversight. This is particularly challenging in non-stationary environments, such as evolving data streams, where distributions might be subject to drift. Complementing previous research on change detection and adaptation, a current research focus is understanding distributional changes and their causes. Of particular interest in the context of this research are feedback loops: these occur, when a machine learning system causes itself changes in its environment, through its predictions and resulting actions. This phenomenon has only very recently received attention under various terms such as influential machine learning, learning with self-fulfilling/self-defeating prophecies, and learning in a performative setting or with feedback-loops. Understanding such prediction-influenced distributional changes, and developing a methodology for the detection and statistical modelling of these are open questions focused in this project.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Statistics/Social sciences (0.8 – 1.0 FTE)

Are you interested in working with a dynamic team of researchers? Do you have the ambition to contribute to scientific progress? Then a PhD position at the department of Methodology and Statistics of Utrecht University might be just the right job for you. You will work on the project “Bayesian Evidence Synthesis for informative hypotheses: Aggregating evidence from conceptual replications”, which is funded by the Dutch Research Council (Open Competition scheme). The proposed research investigates a novel tool for aggregating evidence from studies that investigate a common theory but are too diverse to aggregate with traditional approaches (e.g., meta-analysis). When studies vary considerably with regard to research design, operationalisations of key variables or statistical models used, the parameter estimates or effect sizes may no longer be comparable across studies. This can typically be the case in conceptual replications and complicates the quantification of the evidence for a scientific claim over multiple conceptual replications studies. A solution is found in an approach that aggregates at the level of hypotheses and that is called Bayesian Evidence Synthesis (BES). In a nutshell, BES consists of three steps. First, in each study, a statistical hypothesis is formulated that reflects the overall theory, but that incorporates data characteristics and research methodology unique to that study. Then, a Bayes factor is computed which provides a measure for the amount of evidence for the hypothesis in that study. Finally, the aggregation happens at the level of the Bayes factors. The key idea is that if the study-specific hypotheses represent the same underlying (i.e., latent) effect, the Bayes factors on these hypotheses can be meaningfully combined.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is offering a PhD position in dispersion modeling of nitrogen deposition. As PhD student “Dispersion modeling of nitrogen deposition’ you will be analyzing the contribution of livestock farms and other emitting sources to nitrogen deposition in specific (nature) areas by using dispersion modeling. The data collected by the extensive measuring campaign (both air as deposition measurements) will be used to validate and improve emission and deposition modeling. These models will be used to estimate the contribution of livestock farms to nitrogen deposition more accurately within the Regio Foodvalley and adjacent nature areas. Moreover, the effects of (area specific) interventions to reduce emission on nitrogen deposition can be predicted (scenario analyses). This will provide information how to best move forward towards more sustainable livestock farming.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on Evaluating Greenland glacier-lake interaction (0.8 – 1.0 FTE)

The Faculty of Geosciences is looking for a new colleague for the Department of Physical Geography. In this unique glaciology project you will work on investigating the impact of climate change on lake-terminating glaciers in South Greenland. The aim of the project is to gain a better understanding of the effects of proglacial lakes on glacier mass loss and to assess how this process may accelerate mass loss in the future. You will utilise a combined approach of remote sensing, field measurements, and numerical modelling to identify and parameterise the controlling factors for glacier retreat. Specifically, you will investigate various physical processes acting at the ice-lake boundary to improve an existing calving flowline model for lake-terminating glaciers. The insights of the flowline modelling will be used to develop data-driven parameterisations for calving and subaqueous melt that can be applied in an ice sheet model (IMAUICE and/or UFEMISM). The model will be set up for a selected region in South Greenland to understand the impact of climate change on outlet glaciers.

A multitude of DNA sequence-dependent and -independent interactions between transcriptional regulators and the genome are required for tissue-specific gene expression and cell identity. Interference or lack of specificity in this process results in defective embryonic development and can give rise to various human diseases, including cancer. One particular layer that regulates these processes are modifications of histones and DNA. Such epigenetic modifications contribute to gene expression control through influencing the recruitment of regulatory factors to specific regions in the genome. We aim to understand how epigenetic marks, such as DNA methylation, influence protein-genome interactions, and how this results in specific gene expression programmes.

Proteins determine the distance between cells, which thereafter influences the signalling proteins on the cell surface. This feedback plays a role in the development and function of tissues, as well as in diseases such as cancer and neurological disorders. For instance, in the nervous system the speed of the axonal action potential is determined by the cell‐cell distance and the differentiation of cells depends on an increasing cell‐cell distance. PhD position summary/title: PhD position on Legal opportunities and obstacles for sustainable agriculture in the EU (1.0 FTE)

The agricultural sector is a key contributor to climate change, and is at the same time deeply affected by it: dry spells cause bad harvests, creating scarcity and high food prices. The EU agricultural policy has recently aimed at limiting the environmental impact of farming whilst ensuring food supply. However, in the face of the current climate crisis, merely limiting environmental damage is not sufficient: an environmentally neutral, or even positive effect is now desirable. A system of circular or even regenerative agriculture can contribute to improved soil health, relatively low-cost climate change mitigation (such as carbon sequestering), increased biodiversity and better air and water quality – all without compromising yield. This development raises questions about how EU laws and policies can be shaped so as to effectively and coherently support Member States’ agricultural sectors in the transition to sustainable agricultural practices. The PhD research will engage with this question, identifying the legal opportunities and obstacles for the adoption of a circular or regenerative agricultural system in the EU. Many different EU legal instruments affect the agri-food sector, such as the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), various EU environmental and health & safety norms, and various EU Green Deal instruments, such as the Farm to Fork and Biodiversity Strategies as well as the expected ‘Carbon Farming’ regulatory framework. The transition of the agricultural sector to a circular or regenerative system is, however, also connected to larger trends towards sustainability and circularity globally (such as the SDGs and the Paris and Basel agreements) which also need to be taken into account to provide a coherent normative framework.
