PhD Opportunity in Systems Neuroscience: Visual Circuit Development and Autism.
VIB–KU Leuven’s collaborative research on how human-specific brain development shapes early behavior and neural circuit function in ASD.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD student to join the Laboratory of Cortical Information Processing | Vision to Action at NERF, as part of a Simons Foundation–funded collaboration. The project investigates how human-specific features of brain development shape early behavior and neural-circuit function in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This joint initiative involves the groups of Vincent Bonin, Karl Farrow, Pierre Vanderhaeghen (VIB–KU Leuven), and Franck Polleux (Columbia University). Nature Careers

Closing date: 23 Nov 2025
Location: Leuven
Employer: VIB

Research Focus

  • Linking human-specific synaptic developmental timing to early cortical circuit function and plasticity in ASD

  • Exploring effects of SYNGAP1 haploinsufficiency on the maturation of innate visual behaviors (escape, prey pursuit)

  • Examining the role of the human gene SRGAP2C in behavioral maturation

  • Longitudinal behavioral analysis from early postnatal to adolescent stages using mouse models

Methods & Resources

  • Naturalistic visual-behavior assays (looming threats, prey-like motion)

  • Pose tracking and behavior segmentation with DeepLabCut, MoSeq, Kinect

  • Advanced imaging, automated behavioral analysis, and computational modeling

Required

  • Master’s in Neuroscience, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology, or related field

  • Strong interest in behavioral neuroscience, development, or ASD

  • Programming skills in Python or MATLAB for data analysis

Preferred

  • Experience with rodent behavior assays

  • Familiarity with DeepLabCut, MoSeq, or Kinect-based systems
