The Program

The Graduate School of Frontier Science Initiative (GSFSI) at Kanazawa University, Japan, invites applications from highly motivated candidates for PhD positions across a wide range of cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research areas. Division of Transdisciplinary Sciences

This division pioneers new scientific domains by integrating diverse disciplines, including:

  • Humanities with Science and Engineering

  • Humanities with Medicine

  • Engineering with Health Sciences

Faculty expertise spans cognitive science, medicine, pharmaceutical science, health sciences, physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, mechanical engineering, and electronics. Students benefit from a dynamic, collaborative environment designed to transcend conventional academic limits.

Division of Nano Life Science

Focused on life phenomena at the nanometer scale, this division integrates nanotechnology, chemistry, and life sciences.

  • Basic Research: Advanced nanometrology, scanning probe microscopy (e.g., AFM), supramolecular chemistry, live-cell and single-molecule imaging.

  • Applied Research: Cancer diagnosis and treatment, nano-imaging, and precision medicine.

The division is strongly supported by the Nano Life Science Institute (NanoLSI)—a member of Japan’s prestigious World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI)—offering world-class facilities and global research networks.


Qualifications

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Academic Background: Strong foundation in Bioscience & Biotechnology, Neuroscience, Chemistry & Applied Chemistry, Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Cognitive Science.

  • Language Proficiency: Excellent communication skills in English or Japanese.

  • Educational Requirement: Master’s degree obtained or expected prior to PhD enrollment.


Financial Support & Scholarships
  • MEXT Scholarship (University Recommendation – Special Selection):
    Outstanding candidates may be recommended for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship at the graduate level.
