This time Scientific Bangladesh is interviewing Khatun A Jannath, PhD candidate at the Biosensor and Fuel Cell Lab, Department of Molecular Science Technology, Pusan National University, Busan, South Korea. Join me to hear about her PhD journey. 

1. Scientific Bangladesh: Please briefly introduce yourself, your PhD topic and, your University to our readers.

Khatun A Jannath: I am Jannath, completed my graduation from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), then came to Korea for PhD. Now I am working on the development of a catalyst for application in fuel cell and sensors at Pusan National University.

2. Scientific Bangladesh: What has made you have gone for PhD? In other words, why are you pursuing PhD?

Khatun A Jannath: To enrich my knowledge.

3. Scientific Bangladesh: How did you choose your i) PhD topic and ii) Institute?

Khatun A Jannath: I chose this specific topic because I was interested since my Bachelor’s days to work on catalyst development. I chose PNU as my institution because it’s one of the top-ranked universities in my research area.

4. Scientific Bangladesh: What is the minimum qualification in your university to get admission as PhD student, Bachelor or Master degree?

Khatun A Jannath: For a PhD, you should have a masters degree in the relevant field.

5. Scientific Bangladesh: If anyone wants to do PhD in your University/country, what are the steps one has to follow?

Khatun A Jannath: For PhD, find a suitable supervisor who works in your field. If he agrees to supervise, then you can proceed for admission.

6. Scientific Bangladesh: What are mistakes one should avoid when contacting with University or Professor for PhD studentship?

Khatun A Jannath: Sometimes the resume lacks information such as research interest or extracurricular activities.

7. Scientific Bangladesh: How will you get PhD, by submitting a thesis or publishing a certain no of publications (journal articles)?

Khatun A Jannath: Publications with impact factors of 5 and thesis.

8. Scientific Bangladesh: Did you deliberately choose your Supervisor? What were your criteria for choosing PhD supervisor?

Khatun A Jannath: Because he is an expert in my interested research area.

9. Scientific Bangladesh: What is your key to maintaining a good relationship with your supervisor?

Khatun A Jannath: Hard work and discussion on research.

10. Scientific Bangladesh: What principle do you follow to maintain a good relationship with your labmates?

Khatun A Jannath: By having a productive discussion and no competitive vibe as they are my coworkers, not opponents.

11. Scientific Bangladesh: Doing PhD is a stressful job? How do you manage or release stress?

Khatun A Jannath: Yes, obviously. I try to finish my work on time.

12. Scientific Bangladesh: How many days in a week you go to the lab? Why?

Khatun A Jannath: 6 days, because I have to go and finish my work.

13. Scientific Bangladesh: PhD is considered as training for a career in Research. What 1. technical and 2. Soft skills you are focusing to develop or developed by this time?

Khatun A Jannath: Focusing on developing my skills in catalyst development. Additionally trying to gather knowledge on networking.

14. Scientific Bangladesh: What is your future plan? Want to go back to Bangladesh or not?

Khatun A Jannath: Want to go back to Bangladesh and find a suitable job if possible. Otherwise, I’ll continue here.

15. Scientific Bangladesh: What are your suggestions for prospective PhD students?

Khatun A Jannath: Find suitable research area and country. For PhD you need a lot of dedication.
