Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Research Associate (Job Number: 24000096)
The CSPs are very general combinatorial problems that can be expressed in many different ways: for example, via logic (e.g. logical satisfiability problems), combinatorics (e.g. graph homomorphisms), or algebra (e.g. systems of equations over a field). Such problems can have different computational complexity (e.g. polynomial-time solvable or NP-hard), and the question how exactly the inherent mathematical structure of problems affects the complexity is the essence of the project. There are many mathematical approaches that can be used in this research — recent examples include universal algebra, logic and model theory, combinatorics and graph theory, algebraic topology and topological combinatorics, combinatorial optimisation, category theory, matrix analysis, and Boolean function analysis. The successful applicant will use their own mathematical background, possibly in combination with some of the existing approaches, to assist the project team in developing a new mathematical theory of Promise CSPs, a recently proposed generalisation of the standard CSPs.

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Organisational Behaviour and Leadership (Job Number: 24000295)
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Organisational Behaviour and Leadership to support a research project entitled “Sweating it out for a good purpose: Scaling up mass participation sports events in sustainable ways”. The project aims to examine key antecedents of participation in running events, such as runners’ motivations, differences between younger and older runners, between junior employees and senior leaders as well as between men and women. It also aims to examine the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and career-related effects of physical activity at the workplace and beyond, such as its effects on wellbeing, leaders’ resilience, careers, and social judgements or biased evaluations of others. This project also has a sustainability focus and its findings aim to prompt runners make specific changes in behaviour. You will work alongside a local organisation that organizes mass running events to help answer these research questions and inspire and scale their activities. This will involve bringing your expertise into the role to help shape the underlying research agenda and how it translates into real world impact.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (Job Number: 24000310)

Carbon dioxide is essential for life. It is at the beginning of every life process as a fundamental substrate of photosynthesis or chemosynthesis and is at the end of every life process as the product of aerobic respiration and post-mortem decay. As such, it is not a surprise that this gas regulates such diverse processes as cellular chemical reactions, transport, maintenance of the cellular environment, behaviour and immunity. Carbon dioxide is a strategically important research target with relevance to crop responses to environmental change, insect-borne disease and public health. However, we know very little of the direct interactions of carbon dioxide with the cell, despite the importance of the gas to biology.
Carbon dioxide mediates the earliest known example of a protein post-translational modification (PTM), identified on haemoglobin in 1928. Carbon dioxide can directly combine with select protein groups to form carbamates. Influential research programmes from the 1920-80’s demonstrated that the carbamate PTM regulates oxygen-binding in haemoglobin and activates the carbon dioxide-fixing enzyme Rubisco. George Lorimer proposed carbamate PTMs as a mechanism for regulating biological responses to carbon dioxide in 1983. However, the carbamate PTM is unstable outside the cell and its identification presents significant analytical challenges. Several stable carbamates have been identified in protein molecular structures, but the technical difficulties in their widespread identification has resulted in carbon dioxide-mediated carbamylation being all but forgotten as a PTM. For example, the Wikipedia page for PTM does not mention carbon dioxide-mediated carbamylation (not to be confused with the similarly named modification mediated by isocyanic acid) among 61 identified PTMs.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Archaeology (Job Number: 23002235)
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Archaeology with a particular emphasis on archaeological fieldwork and geodatabases. The Leverhulme Trust-funded project ‘Megalithic Origins: the emergence of monumentality in Neolithic Western Europe’, led by Dr Marta Díaz-Guardamino, aims to determine the context in which monumentality first appeared in Europe and whether it arose independently in each region through the application of state-of-the-art dating techniques and contextual analysis.
The successful applicant will be expected to conduct fieldwork, write up fieldwork reports, organize post-excavation analyses, create a geospatial database with OSL and radiocarbon measurements, and liaising with the other PDRA who will be engaged with dating and geomorphological aspects of the project. The applicant will also author and collaborate with the rest of the project team in the production of journal articles, participate in national and international conferences, and create and regularly update the project website and social media accounts.

About Durham University, England – Official Website
Durham University is a collegiate public research university in Durham, England, founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832 and incorporated by royal charter in 1837. It was the first recognised university to open in England for more than 600 years, after Oxford and Cambridge, and is thus one of the institutions to be described as the third-oldest university in England. As a collegiate university its main functions are divided between the academic departments of the university and its 17 colleges. In general, the departments perform research and provide teaching to students, while the colleges are responsible for their domestic arrangements and welfare.
The university is a member of the Russell Group of British research universities after previously being a member of the 1994 Group. Durham is also affiliated with the regional N8 Research Partnership and international university groups including the Matariki Network of Universities and the Coimbra Group. The university estate includes 63 listed buildings, ranging from the 11th-century Durham Castle to a 1930s Art Deco chapel. The university also owns and manages the Durham World Heritage Site in partnership with Durham Cathedral. The university’s ownership of the World Heritage Site includes Durham Castle, Palace Green, and the surrounding buildings including the historic Cosin’s Library. It was Sunday Times University of the Year for 2005, and the Times and Sunday Times Sports University of the Year for 2015, and was awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2018. Durham University Student Volunteering and Outreach was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2020.

Among British universities, it had the sixth highest average UCAS Tariff for new entrants in 2018 and the third lowest proportion of state-school educated students starting courses in 2016, at 62.9 per cent (fifth lowest compared to its benchmark). The chancellor of the university is Sir Thomas Allen, who succeeded Bill Bryson in 2012. Current and emeritus academics include 14 Fellows of the Royal Society, 17 Fellows of the British Academy, 14 Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences, 5 Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, 2 Fellows of the Royal Society of Arts and 2 Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Durham graduates have long used the Latin post-nominal letters Dunelm after their degree, from Dunelmensis (of, belonging to, or from Durham)
