Title:
PhD position in Synthetic Biology and Metabolic Engineering
Research area and project description:
Carbon fixation by autotrophs is the major biochemical gateway to the organic world. The utilization of one-carbon compounds such as CO2 and methane (accounting for 76% and 16% of total GHG emission), have been recently drawing attention as a low-cost, abundant feedstock for biochemical production. Transformation of CO2 into (bio)chemicals lies at the center of efforts for sustainable production; and are also key for reducing atmospheric CO2 to mitigate global warming.
It is thus highly desirable to integrate CO2-fixation pathways together with methanol dissimilatory pathway to enable creditable growth of novel genotype of yeast on C1 as sole carbon. This will make it possible to put through a CO2-to-fuel path for an industrial interest.
The objectives of this PhD project are, based on the genotype construction of CO2-fixing autotrophic yeast, 1) Adaptive lab evolution for optimization of recombinant yeast growth on CO2 ; 2) Engineering CO2 fixing yeast strain for drop-in fuels production.
Project description. For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. Please simply copy the project description above, and upload it as a PDF in the application.
Qualifications and specific competences:
Applicants to this PhD position must have a recent, relevant Master’s degree (120 ECTS e.g. metabolic engineering or Biochemical Engineering), with excellent academic record.
Prior experience and knowledge on synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, metabolome analysis, fermentation technique and general molecular biology techniques, and gene editing is desired. Experience with analytical techniques including HPLC, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS and NMR is an advantage.
