PhD position summary/title: PhD Student Position in Generative models for Inverse Molecular Design

Inverse molecular design is the process of generating molecules with bespoke properties. Examples include a drug binding a specific biological target or an enzyme with high thermal stability. As such, inverse molecular design is a holy grail of chemical and biological engineering. However, the space of possible compounds or protein sequences is enormous, which excludes explicit screening or discriminative approaches. Here we seek to build a generative AI system that leverages multi-scalar and multi-modal data to generate compounds conditioned on their target properties. The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team in their efforts to target ion-channel proteins to modulate their function to a possible therapeutic effect. Machine learning provides new exciting new opportunities in the natural sciences such as physics, chemistry, and biology. Its potential application areas span from designing new drugs against multi-resistant pathogens and understanding the impact of gene defects on a protein’s function to speeding up computer simulations to understand fundamental scientific phenomena and design optimal algorithms for near-term quantum computers. The path toward these applications can leverage the power of deep learning to represent and process high-dimensional data effectively and encode natural laws and symmetries.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Water saving methods in drinking water systems

Safe drinking water is essential for society, but one of the challenges is to design a robust system delivering drinking water every hour, every day, with no disruptions. Since most of today’s drinking water pipes were laid in the ground in the 1950s-1980s it is a deteriorating pipe network infrastructure affecting society. The water leakage in Sweden is around 20% (but up to 50% in some systems) of the produced drinking water in average. Due to climate change effects, more raw water shortages/scarcities have been observed globally worsening the situation. Despite a country like Sweden, which historically had an abundant supply of water, raw water shortages have occurred locally in several places in the south-east the last decade. With supplies becoming limited, it is essential to minimize loss of drinking water in a cost-effective way. Therefore, we need to manage our water sources more carefully, make sure we lose a minimum of drinking water in the pipe network, but also saving more water within buildings, identify and reuse water such as greywater and rainwater both in private and business buildings. This PhD project will focus on identifying and optimising leakage detection methods for distribution networks, mainly methods and technologies that are available today but also the latest emerging methods and techniques will be included. Analyses of improvements and optimisations of today’s management methods of pipe repair and renewal strategies, to save drinking water, will also be included in the PhD project. Strategies to reduce water leakage in the distribution system will be evaluated using technical effectiveness assessment and societal cost-benefit analyses as well as statistical analyses of existing production and leakage data.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Optimal usage of batteries by adaptive modelling and machine learning

The performance and lifetime of battery cells are to a large extent determined by how they are used, which is managed by a battery management system (BMS). At present, they act through more or less fixed constraints on measurable cell-external variables, i.e., current, voltage and temperature, to avoid accelerated aging and risk of thermal runaway. However, the decisive causes of the limitations are internal conditions that cannot be measured. Due to limited computing capacity and poor coupling between the simplistic battery models used and the cell-internal states, this normally results in an underutilization of the cells at the same time as they age prematurely. Previous theoretical studies have shown that a transition to the use of cell-internal constraints provides significant improvements (tens of percent in performance and longevity). The next generation BMS, with greatly improved computational capabilities, opens for use of both machine learning and more computationally demanding physically based models, with observers connecting the measurements to the critical internal conditions. In this project, you will derive such models, optimal control that uses them, and verify your results in experiments.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Robotic Inspection Systems

The PhD project will be carried out in the Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI) research group, and in collaboration with project partners in the European railway sector. A consequence of increased utilization of the railway systems is increased wear and increased risk of damage to the railway infrastructure. As a result, there’s a strong need of maintenance and repair of the railway infrastructure. Digitalization, AI, and robotics have been identified as potential solutions. For example, a novel contribution to more efficient railway maintenance and repair are digital twins. These intelligent simulations can be used to more precisely predict when a preventive maintenance measure should be carried out. Thus, the risk of sudden, unexpected breakdowns, which can be very costly and dangerous, is reduced. Traffic disruptions due to maintenance activities can also be minimized. However, they need to be continuously updated with fresh data. Together with the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), the Applied AI (AAI) research group at Chalmers-M2 is developing an autonomous railway robot research prototype for data collection, inspection, and repair of railway infrastructure. In the PhD project, building on our previous research, we aim to further develop the robotics inspection and repair system.
